Research Question

What roles did Central Asians who were trained as specialists in Middle Eastern languages play in Soviet diplomatic and development delegations to Middle Eastern countries during the Cold War? How did experiences as Soviet representatives shape their lives, perspectives, and careers?

Significance

This project contributes to the burgeoning field of studies of the Cold War by examining how ordinary people (in this case, Central Asian Arabists) participated in this international conflict, helped to perpetuate it, and were, perhaps, changed in that process.

Methods Used

Oral history research.

Conclusions/Outcomes

Multi-stage project developed over several years; will result in several articles.
