Description

A counselor’s early developmental stages are filled with angst and self-doubt. There are many concerns that distract beginning counselors away from the vital connection they must maintain with their clients. One common distraction for beginners is focus and concern about their own performances as counselors. Although counselor educators need a tangible way to measure beginning counselors’ skills and readiness, this focus on performance issues may compound the distraction from what is paramount for therapy to work – being present in the room. This presentation will explore ways to help beginners attend appropriately to performance-based development, while focusing more on enhancing their therapeutic presence.
