Description

Online developers are recommended to take advantage of technology to facilitate students’ feeling of community in online instruction. One predominant technology is social networking sites (SNSs) like Facebook, MySpace, and Ning. These tools are believed to improve sense of community, especially in online settings (Morrison, Ross, & Kemp, 2004; Wagner, 2005). Although several studies discussed SNSs in educational contexts, limited attempts were made to examine sense of community utilizing SNSs in online settings. The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate online students’ views of sense of community after using social networking as a tool to promote an online learning community. A survey was used to collect data pertaining to students’ usage of SNSs and their perceptions of community. This presentation will discuss the finding and conclusions of the study.
