Location

End Date

Description

Learners’ feelings of isolation, disconnectedness, and lack of social context affect their engagement in online classes and might increase their attrition, a problem that could ultimately affect online education. There is a persistent need for strategies to foster community formation and promote sense of community and belonging. Although multiple strategies are discussed in literature related to online learning, these strategies provide vague descriptions about what the community entails. In our presentation we will discuss Oldenburg’s third place theory as a strategy to create learning communities that share common values and interests, and promote strong, sustainable, social relationships.
