Welcome Home: Creating Intentional Communities of Care for Newcomer Refugee Students and Their Families
My research project seeks to examine the ways in which newcomer schools and supporting social service agencies in Fort Morgan, Colorado prepared teachers, students, families, and local community members for a planned influx of refugees to its community. My focus will be on the proactive steps local and school authorities took to create a welcoming context of reception for refugee students and families. I will also be examining the possible obstacles school and local community leadership faced in their preparation for the arrival of refugee newcomers to the city and the continuing obstacles they face in creating a welcoming community for newcomer families.
