Investigating Missing Cold War Perspectives in Central Asia
What roles did Central Asians who were trained as specialists in Middle Eastern languages play in Soviet diplomatic and development delegations to Middle Eastern countries during the Cold War? How did experiences as Soviet representatives shape their lives, perspectives, and careers?
This project contributes to the burgeoning field of studies of the Cold War by examining how ordinary people (in this case, Central Asian Arabists) participated in this international conflict, helped to perpetuate it, and were, perhaps, changed in that process.
Oral history research.
Multi-stage project developed over several years; will result in several articles.
