Field-Testing of Prototype European Samplers for Determination of Air Quality
How do pollutant emissions from oil and gas with different hydrocarbon profiles and development densities differ?
Understanding methane leakage from oil and gas development is a critical research issue in the field of air quality.
In this project we are deploying prototype diffusive samplers developed by the European Union's Reference Laboratory of Air Pollution (DG JRC; Institute for Environment and Sustainability; Air Quality and Climate Unit).
This state-of-the-art international research project promoted collaboration with European partners to deploy new techniques to assess oil and gas emissions in the field. We also collaborated with federal, state and county agencies as well as developers, advocacy groups and a variety of other universities. Our measurements of volatile organic compounds will be used to contrast the emissions evident at different basins with significant oil and gas emissions. Our results will also be contrasted to aircraft measurements above different US basins, including the UGRB and Uintah, performed by NOAA in April 2015.
