Help-Seeking Pathways in Health Care: The Quest for Medical Service for the Maya Population in Guatemala
The goal of this project is to understand the help-seeking pathways sought by Maya patients with chronic diseases, particularly cancer. The proposed research will focus on trends affecting Maya patients' help-seeking processes, interactions between the public health and traditional indigenous healing systems, and the structural risk factors for this population that may delay obtaining a diagnosis and treatment.
The results will play an important role in understanding help-seeking pathways of Maya patients and shape the provision of health services for this population, including increased understanding of how traditional systems operate.
Data was collected through fieldwork in San Antonio Aguascalientes.
